Résumé: Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) is a technology used in transmission networks based on optical fiber. In the last decade, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks have been deployed in many commercial networks, These networks can provide huge amounts of capacities between nodes in client networks in a flexible and cost-effective way. Taking into account that Internet Protocol (IP) data traffic becomes the most dominant type of traffic, the SDH technology is enhanced with some new features to better fulfil the needs of this traffic type. As the traffic keeps growing, one can observe a slow evolution from SDH to Optical Transport Networks (OTNs). Our report is devoted to study and analysis of SDH technology, mainly it will cover the evolution of SDH which came to cover the limitations of Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy networks by study of the new multiplexing techniques and frame structure of SDH. Then we will concentrate on the SDH network designed structure which provides a powerful protection mechanism (self – healing protection) and synchronization clock between nodes in the network topologies. Finally we will see the practical side by the realization of a Metro SDH network under the supervision of Algeria telecom.
